Buds are finally beginning to do more than just tease us into spring; chartreuse leaves fill the eye all the way down the bike path and around every corner. While the trees certainly are not filled in nor sporting summer’s rich dark coat, we’re no longer in that space between a Wisconsin winter and a Wisconsin spring.
William beams, Jane giggles. William practices his photobombing exactly how a six-year-old should. Jane holds her baby, rides her elephant, and moves about the room with joy and curiosity. Everyone chats as we move to bedrooms–to play, to explore, to be together. Legos, dolls, games, books are a feast for the kiddos….we move quickly between the two spaces to see as much as we can, as fast as we can.
The late April sun is higher at this hour than ever in the last six months. We play with shadows–scooter shadows, pig tail shadows, doll baby shadows, people shadows–all the way to the bike path. Sunday riders and walkers and runners zip by as we liesurely make our way from one bridge to the next. Jane and William both get a shoulder lift from Anne, Jake never loses touch of Jane or her baby. There are jokes and awesome imaginative play along the route–robots and saving the world and such.
After pulling off the bike path, we find ourselves on an adorable corner with a fabulous climbing apple tree, fit with the perfect little swing. Neighbors pour out of the house, everyone chats and catches up on the tidbits that don’t get shared so easily in the winter. We scoot past a Little Library and pick up a couple new books for story time.
It’s a Sunday wrap with an awesome rendition of The Three Little Pigs & The Big Bad Wolf with Jake’s impressive homemade fox mask and best camper tent ever. The kids squeal as Jane, William, and Anne all take turns as The Wolf. The sun soaks the room, Jake starts dinner, and I leave a house of laughter and love.
Just an ordinary spring Sunday together. The best.
