A Winter’s Baby

Wisconsin had a huge snowstorm the day after I spent an afternoon with Noah and his parents, and I wondered if future snowstorms would carry Maggie & Matt back to these early days of hunkering down under a blanket of insulating, dreamy snow globe weather. There will be downhill sledding and snowmen with carrot noses and skiing and hot chocolate with mini marshmallows in the years ahead.  Yet, I do imagine a gentle, yet powerful heartstring tug of holding their swaddled (oh, how he loves to be snuggled in) bundle, with a little sway of the body, alternating staring into his tiny perfection and out at the dancing flakes.

Matt’s great-grandfather built Matt a gorgeous cradle, and while it is a stunning piece of art, it was surely crafted with a love that held his great-grandson decades ago & great-great-grandson today.  What an absolutely incredible gift!  We were able to spend some time getting Noah lulled to sleep here, sharing space in his walls of history.  Sweetly, he only appeared deeply content as long as Mom was near & he was tightly wrapped….just the way it’s supposed to be.

There is so much detail in the ordinary. Noah’s lanugo is gorgeously downy, his lips are perfection, not to be outdone by his perfect crying face.  I notice in my own kids, when they’re really upset, their newborn distress face is still there, part of them forever.  I love how the topography of the house changes with all the extra gear such a little guy brings–diapers and blankets and socks and outfits and burp cloths set up shop in the family room, kitchen, car…. There will be other things later, but this is such a beautiful signature look of a newborn home.  At some point Noah’s books will be falling off the shelves–maybe there will be an investment in a train or construction diggers or dinosaur books or Knufflebunny –but for today, a handful of classics will do, chosen with care.

In the great green room

there was a telephone

And a red balloon

Gosh how I miss all those tiny, seemingly unimportant moments. These images just bring me back to that time when my little guy entered our home and hearts. So nice to have that captured for eternity.ReplyCancel
