Evelyn

It is with such fond remembrance (for myself) that most email correspondence I get with moms of newborns happens at 3am. The world is so quiet then–dark, warm, insulating–just a time for mother & child to rock, soothe, nurse. Connect.  It’s a small, significant chapter, and as the weeks….errrr, sometimes months….go on it may feel a bit like The Neverending Story, but it does indeed come to a close.

The weight of her body

the smell of her neck

the sound of her cry

the pace of your stride

the sway of your body

the shush of your voice

the temperature of the room in the middle of the night

the tick of the clock

the light of the moon

all belong to a newborn parent in a magnificent, all-emcompassing way.

Most glorious night!
Thou wert not sent for slumber!
~Lord Byron, Childe Harold

I had the privilege to meet beautiful Evelyn, daughter of beloved first grade teacher, Ellen.  Evelyn’s arrival was the most anticipated event of the school year, with Ellen’s colleagues and students (and students’ parents and former students and former students’ parents) marking the days and then jubilant with the marvelous news.  That’s to say nothing of how supremely overjoyed Ellen & Matt’s own family and dear friends must feel about sweet Baby Evie!

Matt & Ellen are both absolute naturals–so calm, so easy, so unflustered. Matt had such a remarkable touch that it didn’t seem possible he had only been a dad for a mere two weeks of his life, and Ellen also looked like she flawlessly slipped right into motherhood.  Both were amazingly effortless & relaxed & engaged. Ellen beamed her trademark smile, and Matt wrapped his arms around his wife & daughter at every opportunity.

They spent last year teaching at a school in Italy, and declared it one of the best years of their lives. They shared stories of their young students, their travels, the food they ate, the wine they drank–all a summation of an incredible, life-changing experience. (If Matt can get a gaggle of Italian speaking 3-year-olds to tie their shoes without losing his mind, I deem him a success, coming into the the parenting game with more tools than most newborn parents!) I do believe, however, they may have some stiff competition for their Best Year now!  After all, new life with Evie means life is beautiful for all their days ahead.

I, along with an entire community, cannot wait to see this dear family grow!

From Ellen herself:

What a great experience!  Jen came to our house to capture newborn pictures of our baby girl.  Talk about easy going…this experience was MUCH different than traditional photo shoots.  My husband and I felt so comfortable and loved the fact that Jen encouraged us to be ourselves and “go about our regular day.”  She was able to capture beautiful, natural pictures of us with our little one.  Nothing felt staged or planned.  Jen came totally prepared…swaddles, heater, sound machine, blankets, etc. which was awesome because come on…what parent of a newborn has time to prepare for anything other than their little one.  She was prompt with her communication and super flexible with scheduling.  It was so obvious that she takes her profession very seriously and she knows what she is doing….from soothing a crying baby to capturing the best light in our small apartment.  We highly recommend Jen Lucas Photography!
